V:YAG is a relatively new crystalline material of saturable absorbers and a passive Q-switch in the spectral range from 1064 to 1440 nm, primarily because of an extremely high ground state. The absorption cross section and insignificant absorption of the excited state around the absorption peak at about 1300 nm. This material shows excellent optical, mechanical and thermal properties. It can be grown by the Czochralski method. Crystals V:YAG have been used for various active media such as Nd:YAG, Nd:YAP, Nd:KGW, Nd:YVO4 to achieve compact and good characteristics of passive Q-switched lasers.
